17 Third Saturday  - Lake Park Kite Day, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Founders Park, Lake Park - see this map map to Lake Park.

This is our first festival of the year, and I hope some of you can make it out. This festival usually has a pretty good turnout, and they have always welcomed our club. The field is better for single lines, and we usually have to be careful with all the kids running around, but it is a good place to be. Bring plenty of banners and ground display and be prepared to answer plenty of questions.

31 Beginning of National Kite Month - until May 6th

April 2012 is National Kite Month.

7 First Saturday - WACKOS "official" National Kite Month event. Bring your family, your  banners, your wind garden, chairs, pop-ups and plenty of kites. Don’t forget drinks and something to eat. Let’s hope for the usual outstanding weather.

What a great day! Weather was beautiful, clear skies and warm sun, but not a lot of wind. As usual, the winds were up and down, mostly down, with an occasional strong gust that didn't last but a minute. But there were a lot of flyers and families, banners and several vintage kites could be seen. Even if there wasn't a lot of flying, it was good to be out and see everyone today. The first set of pictures I know of are on Eddie's Facebook page.

19 Third Saturday - What a beautiful day! For the middle of May, this was probably the best flying day we've had this year.

The good news was the weather: partly cloudy skies kept the temperatures in the mid-70's. The high cirrus clouds unveiled a rainbow halo around the sun that lasted two or three hours and was accompanied by one or two "sun dogs". The winds were up and down as usual and we had to keep putting the single liners up frequently; the same was true for the duals and quads. But the winds were strong enough to get some pretty good flying in.

The bad news was there weren't very many flyers enjoying this fine day. Which was good, maybe, because there wasn't any competition for the sky. Stu and I still managed to get the two single liners tangled a couple times.

June 2012

2 First Saturday - Another beautiful day! Mid-70's, mostly sunny skies, an inconsistent but flyable wind, and a special visitor from the "WACKOS Atlanta chapter". Ruth had a blast flying and socializing and wanted to thank everyone who came out for making her trip to Charlotte worth the ride. Thanks to Grumpy, Stu, Brian, Doug, Susie, Hector and Vero. If the weather stays like this on flying days, we're going to have a great Summer!

September 2012

1-3 First Saturday - Mile High Kite Fly at Beech Mountain. The weather, like last year, was iffy and the winds were light as usual. Saturday had some major clouds roll across the mountain but everything cleared in the afternoon and the street dance and night fly were pretty successful.  Then on Sunday, it was cloudier but between rain showers we managed to get in some good light wind flying. It was difficult to get pilots in the air and almost impossible to launch a big Manta Ray. Even partially inflated the Manta got a lot of attention. Until the deluge & thunder around 2 p.m., there was more flying than seeking shelter. Amazingly, many of the spectators came back after the first shower and filled the skies as if nothing had happened. I guess they're learning from us.  Rain or shine, it's always a good time at the Mile High Kite Fly.

15 Third Saturday - What a beautiful day. As usual, winds were up, down and non-existent. But it was a great day to be outside - warm temps, low humidity and an occasional breeze to fly. Decent flying and great company. It's hard not to be at the park on a day like this.

November 2012

3-4 First Saturday - Cape Fear Kite thing, Wrightsville Beach, web site is http://www.capefearkitefestival.com/.  Fly in front of the Shell Island Resort, website is http://www.shellisland.com.

What a great weekend! Friday was not too cold for a night fly - just too few flyers. But the (slightly inebriated) wedding party in the hotel was very enthusiastic. There was an incredible orange moon rise about 9 p.m. Winds blew up the beach most of the weekend but were variable. Most of the kiters were kept busy putting stuff back in the air. The Saturday night fish fry was outstanding and everyone enjoyed the extra hour sleep Saturday night. It was a little chilly Saturday but Sunday was beautiful in the 70s. The clouds moved in Sunday afternoon and brought some really squirrelly winds but the clouds cleared and the winds settled down.

I'm hoping to find some pictures someplace and will put links here once I find some.

Thanks again to Mike & Judy for a fantastic Cape Fear Kite Festival. Looking forward to next year.
